Recording history and tape provenance
The session came two days after Metheny and Gary Burton recorded Dreams So Real in the same studio. Metheny has since said Burton was involved enough to deserve a co-production credit. Burton wrote the original liner notes, quoted by AnalogPlanet.
This is one of Pastorius's earliest recorded appearances, a few months before his own debut album. Collector accounts report he was jetlagged and without his usual amplifier setup for the session.
The album sold modestly at first. One collector estimate puts the original run at around 900 copies. Metheny has cited it repeatedly as a personal favorite. He told the Library of Congress in 2021 that he could happily play all of it today.
AnalogPlanet reports that ECM confirmed the 2024 reissue was cut from the original analog masters with no remastering. That is the label's own statement about its tape source.
Original ECM pressings (1976)
ECM 1073 first pressings carry green labels with silver lettering. The numbering differs across the packaging. The front, back and spine read ECM 1073, the labels read ECM 1073 ST, and the back cover also carries 2301 073.
At least three GEMA rights-society label text variants are documented from the period. They matter only to buyers chasing the earliest copy.
US copies of 1970s ECM titles were manufactured and distributed by Polydor. Later repressings exist with Warner Brothers rim text, and a still later Wakefield repress looks similar. Neither is the 1976 original, so check the rim text rather than the catalogue number.
The 2024 Luminessence reissue
ECM's Luminessence edition appeared on August 2, 2024, in a tip-on gatefold with archival photographs. AnalogPlanet's review rated it 9 for music and 10 for sound.
Several owner reviews on its Discogs page report audible distortion on side A, with side B unaffected. One owner who bought directly from ECM was sent a replacement, which the label checked before shipping. That suggests ECM knew part of the run was affected.
Many other owners report flat, quiet copies with no such problem. Anyone buying secondhand should ask whether the seller has played side A.
Sound quality by pressing
One detailed owner comparison on the Discogs master sets the 2024 reissue against a 1976 German original and prefers the original. That listener heard deeper, more present bass from Pastorius, more air between the players and more tonal color. The same owner grants that the reissue is flatter and quieter.
Another owner finds the Luminessence cut good but short of a Tone Poet or Acoustic Sounds Series record for warmth. That owner calls it comparatively clinical.
A Japanese pressing is praised by one owner for detail and spaciousness, with precise reproduction of the bass tone. No catalogue number or release has been confirmed for it, so it cannot be identified for buyers.
Buyer's guide by budget
