Recording history and tape provenance
For most of the 1950s Holiday recorded for Norman Granz's Clef and Verve labels, always with small jazz groups. By 1957 she had decided not to renew that contract. By October 1957 she had approached Columbia producer Irving Townsend about an album with Ray Ellis. It was her return to Columbia after sixteen years.
Columbia wanted songs Holiday had never recorded before. The twelve titles include "I'm a Fool to Want You," "You've Changed," "For All We Know" and "Glad to Be Unhappy." Ellis scored them for horns, strings, reeds and the choir. Soloists included Mel Davis, Urbie Green and J. J. Johnson.
By 1958 years of alcohol and drug use had left Holiday's voice fragile and rasping, with much of its upper range gone. Her phrasing was intact. Ellis wrote his arrangements to fit the voice as it was. Her last sessions, for MGM in March 1959, became Last Recording, released after her death in July 1959.
The mono LP includes "The End of a Love Affair." The original stereo LP omits it, although the stereo jacket still lists it. A stereo master of the track went unused until reissue producer Phil Schaap located it for the 1997 Legacy CD. No 1958 stereo LP contains it.
The Pressing Matters hears a lifted top end on Holiday's vocal, brighter and more forward than on her Verve records. The reviewer attributes this to Columbia's recording chain, not to any pressing. On a bright system, the worn voice and extra treble together can sound harsh. On a warmer system, the same qualities come across as close and direct.
Original Columbia pressings (1958)
Columbia CL 1157 on the six-eye label is the mono first pressing. Its Discogs entry identifies it by "T.M." in the label rim print. Discogs also lists a second first-pressing label layout, and notes that a later repress lacks the "T.M."
Copies vary widely in condition, given the album's age and steady popularity. A seller who grades strictly matters more than small label details for most buyers.
The original stereo CS 8048 is also a six-eye pressing. It has eleven tracks. "The End of a Love Affair" appears on the jacket but not on the side B label.
Outside the US, the album appeared in 1958 on Fontana in the UK as TFL 5032 and in the Netherlands as 682 024 TL. Coronet issued it in Australia as KLP 706. No sound comparisons of these period pressings with the US original have been published.
Columbia kept both CL 1157 and CS 8048 in print through the 1960s and early 1970s under the original numbers. The Discogs master lists reissues from 1961 onward, including Terre Haute pressings. These later copies use later label designs and are usually cheaper than six-eye originals.
Classic Records and Analogue Productions reissues
Classic Records CS 8048-45 (1998) is a four-disc set of single-sided 45rpm records. Bernie Grundman cut it, and it was pressed at RTI (Record Technology Inc.) in Camarillo, California. The runout reads "CS 8048-B2-45 Bernie Grundman." Classic also issued a single 200g 33⅓ disc on Quiex SV-P vinyl, also credited to Grundman.
Analogue Productions APJ 144-45 is a 2×180g 45rpm set pressed at Quality Record Pressings in Salina, Kansas, in a Stoughton tip-on gatefold. Discogs dates the release to 2023. Its labels and back cover carry a 2022 copyright. Acoustic Sounds describes it as mastered from the original analog tape by Bernie Grundman.
The Pressing Matters disputes that description. The reviewer compared the dead wax on this edition with his own Classic Records 45rpm set and found the inscriptions identical. He concludes the Analogue Productions edition was pressed from the 1998 Grundman cut, not a new mastering.
The same review rates the two 45rpm editions as sonically identical. Classic's cover print has richer color and more detail in Holiday's face and hair. The Analogue Productions gatefold is not glossy, unlike most Stoughton jackets. Analogue Productions fits the same four sides onto two discs instead of four.
The reviewer, who owns both Classic Records editions, rates the 33⅓ disc the weaker of the two. The Pressing Matters is the only source for that comparison.
Later UK reissue
CBS 32259 is a UK mono reissue in CBS's Nice Price series, with all twelve tracks. Its jacket and labels give 1958 copyright dates. Its Discogs entry dates it to the 1980s from the "home taping is killing music" logo on the sleeve.
Japanese pressings
CBS/Sony issued the stereo album in Japan several times. The Discogs master lists SOPL 177 (1973), SONP 50374 (1975), 23AP 100 (1976) and 20AP 1806 (1980). None has a published sound comparison.
Sony Records Int'l SIJP 1171 is a limited stereo reissue released on February 25, 2026, in the Jazz Analog Legendary Collection series. The Discogs entry names no mastering source. The three owner reviews on its Discogs page are positive, and one describes a dead-quiet pressing.
Later European reissues
Legacy Vinyl 88875111741 (2015) is a stereo 180g LP made in the EU and pressed by Record Industry in the Netherlands. Its labels also carry CS 8048. The Discogs entry names no mastering source.
Owner reviews on that page are consistently positive about quiet surfaces and clarity. One owner found the bass thin. Another reports a copy weighing closer to 135g than 180g, with matching runouts.
CBS reissued the album in Europe as S 52540 from 1969, per the Discogs master. A UK mono CBS pressing numbered 52540 has one owner review, which calls it excellent.
Buyer's guide by budget
$: CBS 32259 UK reissue. The lowest-cost way to hear the mono album with all twelve tracks. For stereo, the 2015 Legacy Vinyl LP has consistently positive owner reviews.
$$$–$$$$: A clean Columbia CL 1157 six-eye mono original, priced mainly on condition. A 1998 Classic Records 45rpm set costs about the same or more. The Pressing Matters rates it identical in sound to the Analogue Productions edition.
$$$$: The Analogue Productions APJ 144-45 45rpm set. The same sound as the Classic Records set, per that review, on two discs instead of four.
